Keep Your Child Safe in the Car

Last updated 1 year ago

Child safety is a major concern for parents and legislators alike. It is important to be aware of laws regarding child car seats and safety restraints in your state. Indiana has laws similar to those in many other states, requiring specific safety restraints for young children. Not only is providing the proper safety gear important, but also regularly scheduling service at an auto shop to ensure the vehicle is in top condition. Here is a brief overview of the various laws and regulations regarding child car safety:

  • Child Restraint

Indiana state laws require young children to be secured in specialized child safety restraints, such as a child car seat. This requirement applies to children under the age of eight, though it is also advised for children who weigh less than 40 lbs. The only exception to this legislation is when a child is too large to fit into a regular child car seat.

  • Booster Seat

Booster seats are designed to offer an added level of protection to children who are too old or too large for a car seat. These are not required by Indiana legislation but are strongly recommended for children who are under nine years of age or are too small to be adequately protected by an adult seat belt.

  • Safety Belt

Children who have outgrown a car seat can be protected with an adult seat belt. From the age of eight until 15, booster seats and car seats are optional and recommended for smaller children, but the law only requires that they be restrained by an adult seat belt.

These safety laws are put in place to protect children of all ages in the event of a collision.
